Maine Turnpike Authority Reminds Drivers to Heed Flashing 45mph Signs for Safer Winter Travel

While 45mph signs are advisory, State Police can still ticket for "imprudent speed"

Portland, MAINE — Maine Turnpike Authority would like to remind the public that when the flashing 45mph signs are on or signage indicates winter weather conditions, motorists should slow down and be on the look-out for slow moving snow plows. Road conditions might be poor even when it is not snowing due to re-freezing. These flashing signs are used in order to keep road users safe, to reduce the risks of crashes due to poor road conditions, and to allow our road workers to safely and adequately clear the roads.

The flashing 45mph speed-limit signs are activated when weather conditions require a reduction in speed to keep everyone on our road safe. Obeying these warning signs contributes to safer driving environments and avoids crashes. While the flashing 45mph signs are advisory, Maine State Police can take enforcement action for “imprudent speed” when conditions warrant.

Sgt. Daniel Hanson, Maine State Police Troop G reminds us, “the mission of our Troopers on the highway is to ensure the safety of the motoring public and to reduce crashes.  The 45-mph advisory is a warning to the public about the risk of driving too fast. We often respond to the end result of someone failing to do so,” said Hanson.

One of the MTA’s missions is to promote safe driving practices and ensure the safety of all road users. We encourage everyone to remain alert while on the turnpike and to lookout for road signs during poor weather conditions, especially if roads are slick or icy, and to always pay attention in work zones.
