Maine Turnpike urges travelers to drive safely during the busy Thanksgiving week

Portland, MAINE — The Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) is urging drivers to remain vigilant and patient as traffic volumes are expected to increase on the Turnpike during the Thanksgiving holiday week. Wednesday is expected to be the busiest day of the week on the Maine Turnpike. Although construction and maintenance activities are winding down for the winter months, some areas may still feature narrowed lanes and both daytime and nighttime work zones early in the week. With some inclement weather in the forecast, it is essential to drive at speeds appropriate for the conditions and use your headlights.

“While the day before Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day nationally, it doesn’t compare to peak summer traffic on the pike in August,” said Erin Courtney, MTA’s Director of Communications. “That said, we anticipate more travelers on the road this week, many of whom may not be familiar with the area. We ask everyone to be patient, plan a little extra time for the unexpected, and obey posted speed limits.”

The MTA provides weekly travel advisories at www.MaineTurnpike.com, which detail current construction and maintenance activities. Travelers can also access traffic cameras on the site to check road conditions before hitting the road.
