New traffic patterns begin next week at West Gardiner I-295 toll plaza

Highway-speed ORT lanes scheduled to open this fall

WEST GARDINER, Maine - Beginning Tuesday, April 6, 2021, traffic patterns at West Gardiner I-295's toll plaza currently under construction will change when the new Cash/E-ZPass Toll Plazas are activated.  These new plazas are located just north of the old plazas and require a shift in traffic to accommodate on-going construction of the E-ZPass Open Road Tolling (ORT) lanes.
Here's what to expect:

  • Northbound drivers leaving I-295 will proceed through the old cash plaza without stopping and pay at the new Toll Plaza 600 feet ahead.

  • Southbound drivers leaving I-95 at Exit 103 will pay at the new Toll Plaza then make a short detour around the old toll plaza and continue south on I-295.  A diagram of the traffic pattern changes for both directions is attached. These changes are necessary in order for construction crews to remove the old cash plaza and continue building out the ORT lanes in that space. Once the ORT lane construction is complete later this year, testing and fine tuning of the new ORT lanes will occur before activating for motorists to use in the fall of 2021.
This $30 million project was awarded to Sargent Corporation from Stillwater, Maine and began in May of 2019.
