The Maine Turnpike Safety Patrol sponsored by GEICO is a free service that provides assistance to stranded motorists on the Maine Turnpike. The Safety Patrol also clears the Turnpike of debris and other hazards and provides temporary traffic control at minor accident scenes to help keep Maine Turnpike customers safe and traffic flowing smoothly.
 
The Safety Patrol offers free, limited roadside assistance to drivers in need, including:
  • Changing flat tires
  • Jump-starting vehicles
  • Providing lockout assistance
  • Moving disabled vehicles to the shoulder
The patrol vehicles are equipped with emergency lighting and road flares to further increase safety for stranded motorists, and also to help relieve congested traffic at the scenes of incidents and accidents. Patrol operators will also assist the Maine State Police and other first responders when needed.

What does the Safety Patrol do?
The Safety Patrol sponsored by GEICO travels the Maine Turnpike during coverage hours looking for stranded motorists, debris on the road and traffic accidents or other incidents. The Safety Patrol drivers assist in these situations to help motorists and ultimately keep traffic moving.
 
How much will this service cost motorists?
There is no charge for the service.
 
What services do you offer?
The Maine Turnpike Safety Patrol sponsored by GEICO provides assistance to help motorists get back on the road in the event of a minor incident, such as a flat tire or overheated engine. The Safety Patrol will provide traffic control for disabled vehicles and minor crashes, as well remove debris and hazards from the Turnpike.
 
What are your hours of operations?
The Maine Turnpike Safety Patrol sponsored by GEICO operates on the Turnpike, between Exit 42 in Scarborough and Mile 57 in Cumberland, Monday through Friday from 7:00 to 10:30 am and between Exit 48 in Portland and Exit 32 in Biddeford, from 3:30 to 7:00 pm.

Additionally, from April to December, the Safety Patrol operates on the Turnpike from the Piscataqua River Bridge in Kittery to Exit 19 in Wells. This seasonal patrol operates from 11 am to 7pm on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Where do I call if I need help?
You may dial #999 or (207) 871-7701 from your cell phone and the Maine Turnpike Authority will dispatch a Safety Patrol vehicle. The Maine Turnpike Safety Patrol sponsored by GEICO should be able to locate you within 15 to 30 minutes unless they are detained because of another accident or incident. If you are stranded on the highway, move your vehicle to a safe location, stay inside, and wait for help to arrive.

Move Over for the Maine Turnpike Safety Patrol sponsored by GEICO

The Move Over Law was passed in 2001 requiring motorists on Maine’s roadways to slow down and, if safe to do so, pull over for a stopped emergency vehicle. Motorists are required to use the same caution when approaching a stopped Safety Patrol vehicle on the Maine Turnpike.

Safety Checklist

Traveling on the Maine Turnpike
  • Make sure your vehicle is in good driving condition.
  • Buckle up your seat belt.
  • Make sure you are fit to drive.
  • Use your signals when changing lanes, entering and exiting the roadway.
  • Consider carrying a flashlight, flares and a fire extinguisher in your vehicle.
  • Turn on your headlights whenever windshield wipers are used in inclement weather.
  • Carry cash or E-ZPass (Electronic Toll Collection) to pay tolls.
 
If you are in an accident
  • If possible, remove accident vehicles from travel lanes.
  • Dial 9-1-1 for assistance.
  • Check for and attend to injuries.
  • Exchange driver and vehicle insurance information.
  • Wait for the Safety Patrol.
