The Maine Turnpike Authority is seeking a full-time student currently enrolled and pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Surveying Engineering, Construction Management, or a similar/related field. This is a seasonal, entry-level position based out of our Portland, Maine office. The Turnpike is 110 miles of interstate highway in southern Maine. This position requires daily travel along the corridor and includes both field and office work. This is semi-skilled technical work assisting Engineering staff with construction inspection and contract administration. The intern will work under the supervision of a Construction Project Manager and engineering staff to help ensure projects comply with plans and specifications. Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Observing and documenting contractor work to verify compliance with plans and specifications.
• Performing measurements and calculations to determine quantities of work completed.
• Maintaining daily inspection reports of work activities, labor, equipment, and materials.
• Attending construction meetings and preparing meeting minutes.
• Assisting with filing, scanning, indexing, and reproducing engineering documents.
• Performing related duties as assigned.
Employees are supervised at regular intervals to ensure quality and accuracy of work. Applicants must be able to read and interpret plans, specifications, maps, and technical drawings. Basic knowledge of engineering principles and mathematics is required. Coursework or experience in surveying, construction methods, Microsoft Office, and CADD is preferred.
This position requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions and in active construction environments. The employee must be able to traverse uneven terrain, lift up to 40 pounds, and wear required personal protective equipment. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with flexibility required for construction schedules. Must possess and maintain a valid Class C State of Maine driver’s license and a clean driving record. Pay rate is $25.00 per hour.
