The Maine Turnpike Authority is seeking a full-time student currently enrolled and pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Surveying Engineering, or a similar/related field. This is a seasonal, entry-level position based out of our Portland, Maine office. The Turnpike is 110 miles of interstate highway in southern Maine. Some travel along the corridor is required. This is semi-skilled technical work assisting Engineering staff with design and construction-related projects. The intern will work under the supervision of a Project Manager and engineering staff to support project development from preliminary analysis through final plans. Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Assisting with engineering calculations, analysis, and report preparation.
• Supporting completion of preliminary and final construction plans.
• Performing quantity take-offs and basic engineering calculations.
• Conducting field investigations, data collection, and survey quality review.
• Attending project and department meetings.
• Performing related duties as assigned.
Employees are supervised at regular intervals to ensure quality and accuracy of work. Applicants must be able to read and interpret plans, specifications, maps, and technical drawings. Basic knowledge of engineering principles and mathematics is required. Candidates should be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks. Coursework or experience in surveying, Microsoft Office, and CADD is preferred.
This position is primarily office-based but may include occasional field visits. The employee must be able to traverse uneven terrain when in the field, lift up to 20 pounds, and wear required personal protective equipment as needed. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with flexibility required for occasional non-routine hours. Must possess and maintain a valid Class C State of Maine driver’s license and a clean driving record. Pay rate is $25.00 per hour.
