Dale Doughty

Acting Commissioner of MaineDOT Dale Doughty offers more than three decades of experience in transportation, public works, and municipal leadership. Throughout his career, Dale has been dedicated to keeping Maine moving safely and efficiently while advancing innovative, sustainable solutions for the state’s transportation system.

A Maine Certified Geologist, Dale began his career with geotechnical and geological engineering firms before joining MaineDOT in 1996. Over the next 22 years, he served in the Office of Environment and the Bureau of Planning before being appointed Director of the Bureau of Maintenance and Operations. In 2018, he left state service to become Public Works Director and later Deputy City Administrator for the City of Lewiston.
Dale returned to MaineDOT in 2021 as Director of Public Outreach and Planning, and in 2022 was appointed Director of the Bureau of Planning. From 2022 to 2024, he helped guide the department’s planning priorities before being named Deputy Commissioner in March 2024. In that role, Dale oversaw department-wide policies and operations, advised the Commissioner, and supported MaineDOT’s multimodal responsibilities across the state. Over the course of his career, Dale has led and supported initiatives that promote safety, sustainability, and connectivity. These efforts include public safety campaigns to reduce roadway incidents, a data-sharing partnership with Waze, and expansion of the GO MAINE commuter program. His leadership reflects a consistent commitment to enhancing mobility and quality of life for all Mainers.

A lifelong Mainer, Dale holds a bachelor’s degree in Geology and Chemistry from the University of Maine at Farmington and pursued graduate studies in Geology at West Virginia University. He and his wife, Pam, live on a small farm in Pittston. They have two adult daughters.
