Maine Turnpike Authority Board Selects Andre J. Briere as Nominee for Executive Director

Confirmation process now moves to the Maine Legislature

Briere-Headshot-(1).jpgPORTLAND, Maine – The Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) Board of Directors has voted unanimously to nominate Andre J. Briere as the next Executive Director of the MTA, pending legislative confirmation. The nomination follows a comprehensive search process, with the Board prioritizing a candidate who embodies strong leadership, strategic vision, and a deep understanding of transportation and infrastructure management.

Briere brings a distinguished career in transportation, logistics, emergency management, and large-scale project leadership. He most recently served as the Deputy Commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT), where he played a critical role in advancing transportation initiatives and overseeing statewide infrastructure programs. Prior to his tenure at NHDOT, Briere held executive roles in the private sector and served a decorated 29-year career in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Colonel. A highly credentialed leader, he is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and a FEMA-certified National Executive Emergency Manager.

“Andre’s extensive experience in both public service and private industry, combined with his leadership acumen, make him the right choice to guide the Maine Turnpike Authority into the future,” said MTA Board Chair Michael Cianchette. “His ability to manage complex projects, drive operational efficiency, and prioritize safety will be instrumental in ensuring the Turnpike remains a model of financial stewardship and customer service for years to come.”

Briere is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, where he earned honors, and holds multiple advanced degrees. His career includes serving as the Defense Attaché of the United States to the Russian Federation, representing the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to the Russian General Staff.

With the Board’s nomination, Briere’s confirmation process will now move to the Maine Legislature. The Joint Standing Committee on Transportation will hold a public hearing in the coming weeks, followed by a full Senate vote. If confirmed, he will assume the role as Executive Director upon taking the oath of office.

The Board also extends its deep appreciation to Peter Merfeld, who has provided steady leadership as Interim Executive Director over the past six months. His dedication and expertise have been invaluable during this transition period.
