Maine Turnpike Turns 78

Portland, ME —This Saturday, Dec. 13, marks the 78th anniversary of the Maine Turnpike—a highway that has delivered nearly eight decades of mobility and economic growth while operating independently of Maine’s state transportation budget. Opening on December 13, 1947, the Turnpike was originally intended to become toll-free after construction bonds were paid. Thirty-five years later, the Legislature voted to keep the Turnpike model and toll-revenue—a decision that continues to save Maine millions each year.

Its mission is to serve Maine by connecting customers, communities and commerce through a safe and reliable toll experience. Today, the Maine Turnpike is more than just a good highway. It is safe, reliable and provides a modern connection to the rest of the nation to help drive Maine’s economy. Unlike other roads, the Turnpike is 100% funded by its users—not by state or federal tax dollars. Two-thirds of toll revenue comes from out-of-state drivers, meaning Maine residents benefit from a premium highway system without added strain on the state budget.

“All roads cost money,” said Executive Director Andre Briere. “Driving the Turnpike comes with a cost — but it’s a pay-for-peak-performance road, delivering value-driven benefits, like safety, that go beyond convenience. It’s like paying for a streaming service without ads or choosing a direct flight over one with layovers — you get where you’re going faster, with fewer delays.”

To give Maine residents a bigger bargain, the Maine turnpike introduced an E-Z Pass volume discount in the early 2000s. Today, Maine E-Z Pass holders can save up to 40%, and many families share one account across multiple vehicles to maximize their discount.

“It’s a user-funded service, but it’s also the safest, has its own traffic management center and safety patrols, and a strong State Police presence — all funded by the revenue it generates, said Executive Director Briere. “We provide a premium service unlike other roads,” added Briere. “But the Turnpike is also the most reliable highway in the state, and when the weather gets nasty, Maine drivers know the Turnpike will be plowed, bare, and black as soon as reasonably possible,” said Briere.

Today, the Maine Turnpike spans 109 miles, carries 11% of Maine’s traffic, and moves more than half of the state’s interstate freight—making it a critical corridor for commerce. Recent investments include the opening of Exit 35 in Saco in November 2025.

As we celebrate 78 years of progress, the Maine Turnpike Authority thanks its customers for their trust, contributions and their support every time they choose to use it.
