KENNEBUNK, ME — This National Dog Day, the Maine Turnpike Authority is doing something rare in the world of transportation services — and a first for Maine. MTA is hosting its own Pup Cup Day. While pup‑cup pop‑ups have become familiar sights at pet care businesses, ice cream shops, drive‑throughs, and even dog parks, bringing one to a major interstate could be a national first. The goal is simple, meet traveling families right where they are and share essential pet‑travel safety tips with support from the Animal Welfare Society. Pup Cup Day will take place at the southbound Kennebunk Service Plaza on Wednesday, August 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Travelers are invited to stop by with their canine companions for a free Pup Cup, fresh water and an opportunity to stretch their legs – even splash around to cool off. AWS staff will also share practical tips and resources to help families keep their pets safe and comfortable on the road.
“This event is a fun way to celebrate the dogs who join us on so many family adventures while helping travelers prepare for a safer, more comfortable trip,” said Olivia Guinard of Maine Turnpike Authority. “We’re grateful to Animal Welfare Society for sharing its expertise and helping us provide drivers with practical guidance to keep pets safe, comfortable and secure wherever the road takes them.” “At AWS, our mission is centered on helping pets and their families stay together and thrive,” said Heidi Marston, Executive Director. “That includes sharing simple, practical information families can use to keep their pets safe.”
The Maine Turnpike offers three northbound and three southbound service plazas, providing safe and convenient locations for families and their pets to address travel needs. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the Pup Cup station to learn more about safe pet travel, give their dog a well-earned break and celebrate National Dog Day with a sweet treat.
