Planning your Thanksgiving road trip in an electric vehicle? The Maine Turnpike now has new EV charging locations at the Gray and Cumberland Service Plazas, offering travelers another convenient place to recharge along their journey. The stations provide high powered charging while customers enjoy the services and amenities available at the plazas.
“Thanksgiving is one of our busiest travel seasons,” said Rebecca Grover of MTA. “And with so many students at Maine colleges and universities potentially heading home earlier for Thanksgiving break, we want to share this update now to support their route planning. Maine Turnpike has been and will continue to be a safe way for Maine families to travel."
Installed and operated by Applegreen Electric, each location features an Alpitronic HYC400 fast charger capable of charging up to two vehicles simultaneously. The chargers support both CCS and NACS (Tesla) connectors, offering universal compatibility for EV drivers.
“The Turnpike first introduced EV charging stations at the Kennebunk northbound and southbound plazas in 2019. Fast chargers were added in 2021 with Efficiency Maine. Until now, travelers heading north from Kennebunk along the 109 mile interstate often needed to detour off the Turnpike to recharge,” added Grover, noting that caring for Maine includes supporting evolving and expanded on travel choices.
Drivers can pay using credit or debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or through the Applegreen Fast Charge mobile app, available in both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
These new charging stations are part of Applegreen Electric's commitment to expanding accessible EV infrastructure and supporting the growing number of electric vehicle drivers traveling throughout the Northeast and were made possible by a contribution from Efficiency Maine.
