The first cars used the new interchange just after midnight
SACO, MAINE — Just after midnight on Monday, November 3, the new Exit 35 in Saco will officially open to traffic. Commuters in the region will now have both northbound and southbound access to the Maine Turnpike without having to traverse Route 112 and local roads to Exit 36.
The Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA), along with municipal partners and contractors, held a ribbon-cutting celebration for the new interchange on October 24. At that time, crews were completing final tasks such as installing signage, striping, and testing the new toll system.
“Over the past week, crews have been working hard to make sure everything is ready for opening day,” said MTA Executive Director Andre Briere. “Despite some rain last week, Exit 35 is ready to start relieving traffic in Saco—helping commuters get to the Turnpike more easily and safely, and helping local traffic.”
The $42 million project originated from a 2019 transportation study conducted by the Maine Turnpike Authority, Maine Department of Transportation, and the City of Saco. The study aimed to address regional traffic issues and improve access to and from the Turnpike. Exit 35 is designed to provide easier Turnpike access for westbound traffic, reduce peak-hour congestion along Route 112 and Industrial Park Road, and help ease traffic at Exit 36. Approximately 40,000 vehicles per day use Exit 36; that amount is likely to be reduced by half with the opening of Exit 35.
As with any new traffic pattern, the MTA urges drivers to use caution and stay alert as motorists become familiar with the new layout.
While the interchange will be open to traffic, some finishing work will continue in the surrounding area over the coming months. Sargent Corporation of Orono served as the lead contractor for the project, which began in 2023.
